Our Mission to the Basek of Equatorial Guinea, Africa

Who are the Basek?

The Basek are a minority people group living in Equatorial Guinea (E.G.),  which is a small country on the Atlantic coast of central Africa. There are approximately 4,000 Basek people living in four remote  villages Yengue being the most prominent. As of yet, they do not have a written language or an educational system.

Living in the rainforest, most Basek live off the land, relying upon subsistence farming and fishing. Healthcare is essentially non-existent. Many people die each year from treatable diseases, such as Malaria. The Basek are a beautiful people, but they are also vulnerable. They rely on folk healers and primitive forms of spirit worship for their provision and protection. Up until 2004, they were classified as an unreached people group which, in part , means they had no Christian churches among them, no Bible scriptures in their language and no active outreach directed toward them. The first team to visit the Basek from Warm Springs Baptist Church in 2004 showed the Jesus Film in Yengue. There is a small group of Basek who now identify themselves as Christians.  Wycliffe Bible translators, in partnership with WSBC, has now produced a written alphabet for the Basek language. Thanks be to God!

The Mission Endeavor

God has put the Basek on the heart of the Warm Springs family.  We have entered into partnership with Scott and Margaret Smith (Wycliffe Bible translators), Pastor Endje of the Betania churches of E.G. Guinea, and the Basek to see them reached and growing in maturity as Christian believers.  We are committed to devoting our resources, along with our love and affection to help the Basek receive and achieve the following:

  • The New Testament in their own language
  • The training and ability to translate the Old Testament into their language
  • The training and ability necessary for the development of literacy, so they can read God’s word in their own language.
  • A viable, indigenous, reproducing,  witnessing and culturally relevant church in their midst

Thus far, we have sent four teams since 2004 to E.G., funded the construction of a school in the remote Basek village of Yengue, funded a teacher salary for that school, provided shelter and medical assistance to Pastor Endje and his family, funded translation toward an eventual Basek Bible, and have helped send Kevin and Jann Bradford to be full-time Bible translation missionaries to join the team in Cameroon, Africa. Future projects include school latrines, teacher salary, continued translation work, and assembling the next team to go visit the Basek. By the grace of God and with your generous help, we can  continue making a profound difference in the lives of the Basek TODAY!
